Tortoiseshell accessories gained popularity during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, and used real turtles and large tortoises. Tortoiseshell was noted for its smooth and desirable markings, and its shells were harvested for everything from combs, to guitar picks, to glasses. Real tortoiseshell was quickly banned in the 1970s, to prevent the animals from becoming extinct. Our designs use custom marble board acetate that mimic the look of true tortoiseshell and are all vegan.
